I stumbled upon article on The Guardian by Chris Webster, director of eBay EU Cross Border Trade, which says “In the run-up to Christmas this year, total exports from eBay.co.uk are on track to grow by 16% compared to the same period last year, with imports surging by 39%.” [2012]

Here is some significant fact from this article:

  • Exports to Russia this Christmas, for example, are predicted to increase by 119% compared to 2011, and clothing – in particular women’s shoes and dresses – are topping Russian Christmas lists.
  • Exports to China – an emerging market that one fifth of eBay businesses identified as ‘one to watch’ in 2012 – will increase by 36%.
  • The US is the most popular destination for UK exports with over 2.2 million items predicted to be shipped from the UK between October-December alone.

It is clear that UK businesses must aim to work on eBay sites other than UK to increase cross border trade rather than depending solely on UK market. If you are worried where to start simply start with one of our EU countries i.e. Germany, France or Spain and move to next one gradually. “Cross border trade represents a massive economic opportunity for the UK, and eBay makes trade without borders a reality by giving businesses big and small a simple, low cost platform to reach over 100 million shoppers around the world 24/7.” On April 2013, eBay launched a UK International Selling hub within the UK Seller Centre where merchants can find all the information needed about cross border trade in a central location, making it even easier to reach 116 million buyers in 14 marketplaces around the world with eBay. So, there is lot of information and help around.

I stumbled upon this eBay video recorded back on 2003 which talks about eBay’s ambition for cross-border trading. “The long-term ambition is to have a language translator so that you can trade in Korean with somebody in Germany.”

Finally eBay found Webinterpret which helps to import product listings automatically localises, optimises and new shops are generated in up to 26 countries on local marketplaces. Stocks are synchronised in real-time and you can communicate with your customers by email or over the phone thanks to our multilingual communication technology. Sounds all good to me! It even gives you 30 day trial. Some you might have got call from one of eBay representative who discussed on the International Growth Programme in partnership with Webinterpret. eBay encourages you consider the programme which gives you exclusive benefits, to help you accelerate your overseas sales by reaching more buyers in international markets. It even claims sellers in the program have seen their overseas sales grow by more than 25% in 2 months.  Here are benefits of signing up to this program.
